Red Lily Vineyards

Red Lily Vineyards

Red Lily Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery committed to a single goal — producing the finest Spanish-inspired wines possible. We fell in love with Spanish wines years ago, particularly tempranillo and its brooding, earthy character, and chose to make these wines our focus. Red Lily Vineyards is named principally for Bolander’s Lily, a rare species of red lily found in the neighboring Siskiyou Mountains. However, it also has another, more special meaning, as our daughter is named Lily.

Red Lily Vineyards is located in the Applegate Valley AVA. The 260-acre property, formerly a hay and cattle ranch, is located right on the Applegate River and includes its own unique and beautiful river beach - the site of our incredibly popular annual summer concert series. Our winery and tasting room are situated close by, with amazing views of the river and the valley. The grounds include several metal sculptures by local artist, Cheryl D. Garcia, including a red lily and a bottle tree. A historic and rustic 80-year old Pole Barn adjoins our tasting room, providing a perfect gathering space for wine tasting. Plus, the tasting room offers various food options to specifically complement our wines. Meanwhile, our vineyards are located on the upper slopes of our property and include the Bean Patch Vineyard (site of the original homesteader’s bean patch) along with the aptly named Stargazer Vineyard, which affords incredible views of the night sky, as well as the entire valley.

Spanish Centric Wines

When we first encountered Spanish tempranillo, we were overwhelmed by its combination of raw power and subtle earthiness. As we explored planting our first vineyard, we were excited by the fact that tempranillo seemed so well suited to the southern Oregon climate, and in particular, the Applegate Valley where we live. And in fact, tempranillo has proven to be virtually a perfect match and we have been very pleased with the wines that we have produced, in particular our flagship Red Lily. This 100% tempranillo has won numerous awards, most recently a Double Gold medal at the prestigious 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. We also produce a number of other award-winning, tempranillo-based wines including Red Blanket and Life of Riley, both of which are tempranillo/cabernet sauvignon blends. Our signature white wine is our Stargazer Verdejo. While verdejo is the backbone for some amazing wines from the Rueda region in Spain, it is relatively unknown in America. It produces some stunningly complex and layered white wines, and we’re excited to help pioneer it in this country. Meanwhile, our Lily Girl Rosé is an homage to our daughter, as well as a fine example of a tempranillo/grenache rosé, not to mention an incredibly popular summer wine! Finally, we also recently released our first dessert wine, the Port-style Night School, which won Best of Show in the Oregon Wine Experience.

Wine Making Philosophy

Red Lily is a terroir driven, small cuvee winery whose underlying philosophy is to create wines that have a sense of place. To put it simply, we strive to produce the highest quality wines possible that reflect the unique parcels of land on which the vines are planted. Our wines are created by an uncompromising and passionate focus on quality and attention to detail in all aspects of the wine making process. Great wines are created in the vineyard and this is where our winemaking starts. Sustainable practices, coupled with a tremendous amount of hand labor, allow us to keep our vines in balance and manage our reduced yields. In the winery, a minimalist approach is taken during fermentation and aging, and gentle handling of the wine throughout the process permits the fruit to express itself naturally. Patience, patience, patience, and then just a bit more patience!
