Twenty years ago when Earl and Hilda Jones established Abacela as Southern Oregon’s 13th winery Oregonians grew the standard international varieties Pinot, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet. The Jones’s vision was that several other Old World varieties not previously grown in Oregon had the potential to produce highly competitive wines for the marketplace, if site and climate matched.
“We only produce estate wines that meet our standards for aroma, flavor and style.”
The trailblazing continued with production of estate grown Malbec, Viognier, Grenache, Syrah, Tannat, Graciano, Cabernet Franc, Bastardo, Tinta Amarela, Douro Port grapes etc. These medal winning varietal wines were among the first, if not the first, of their type bottled in Oregon and/or the Pacific Northwest.
In the 1990’s other growers and wineries also planted new varieties and as a result, today, Southern Oregon is in a virtual Wine Renaissance with the best suited of these new varietal wines now recognized as benchmarks of a new regional paradigm.
